Wanna Start A Business? Move from being the product to the customer to the creator

It’s the #StartABusiness Challenge… lol. It isn’t. But you should be asking yourself, “Why should I start a business?” Or, more importantly, “Should I start a business?” That is something that no one should be answering for you, but you. And, in a 2017 world where starting a business is just as easy as coming up with a horrible idea to start a business, no one is going to stop you. But… I will help you start if you’re ready. Before we get to that, let’s consider something that is happening to each of us in business every day. Fair warning, this isn’t meant to get you rich. You are being sold A while ago when social networking sites starting popping up (circa MySpace & Friendster) I said to a friend of mine, “if you’re […]

Money Scarcity and The Wealth Mindset

Money scarcity is a real thing. I would even venture to say that, in our country, money is the root of scarcity. Scarcity is driven into all of us at the very beginning of understanding trade. We no longer are taught to understand trade through value but now, more than ever, we understand trade through money. And, because money is a limited resource based on how fast you can get it versus the rate at which to expend it, it is immediately viewed as a scarce resource. It drives greed and fear around the scarcity mindset it breeds. But what is money scarcity? Scarcity is the idea that there is not enough of a resource to provide for all of a society’s wants and needs. The problem is, while scarcity is great if you’re trying to […]

Live a luxury life without a luxurious budget – with Young Rich Rooted

I live a pretty luxurious lifestyle. It’s mine though. And, it’s a life of luxury that I feel is right for me. I don’t drive a half-million dollar car or live in a mansion. Although I work for myself, I still have to work. But, I have decided for me what happiness looks like and I pursue it daily. While I’m constantly looking to level up, my greatest luxury is living my life instead of someone else’s. So in order to feel rich without being rich, I had to look at some of my behavior and the behavior of those around me. I had to really figure out what made me feel fulfilled and enriched. Young Rich & Rooted I spoke with a friend of mine from Young Rich & Rooted, Bee Lewis, about how […]

The BEST way to invest your money and your time wisely

My nephew asked me once, “What’s the best way to invest your money?” I’m not sure that my response was a surprise to him, though. I’m a big fan of asking, “What do you want out of life?” Once you know that part, you can put your time and money into achieving it. Now, Jim Rohn (always quoted on this site) said, ‘Work hard at your job and you can make a living. Work hard on yourself and you can make a fortune.’ So I think when we look out how to invest our money, we should first consider ourselves and, also consider our time. The Paradoxical Theory of Abundance As I thought a little more on how to best invest time and money I realized something that has always been true for me. I make a lot […]

If perception is reality, you are responsible for shaping it.

We often hear phrases like “perception is reality” that contradict other phrases like “things aren’t always what they seem.” What do they mean though? And which is more accurate? There are different schools of thought on the matter from realists, to optimists, to absolutists. Each of those hold principles that will force you to interpret the phrases differently. Allow me to make an argument without defining it by any particular title. First, perception. Perception is defined as the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses. With that, perception is far more than just what you see. Instead, how you interpret your experience with, and perspective of, a person or situation will shape how you perceive it to be. Perception is how we understand things to be. When you consider perception as your […]

About your legacy… and what is legacy exactly?

When I did a search to define legacy it gave me something I wasn’t expecting. Legacy is defined primarily as a gift, particularly money or personal possession, that is willed to another. I thought that was inheritance so of course I had to look that word up to. Inheritance is poorly defined but is considered synonymous with legacy or endowment. When we discuss Dr Martin Luther King Jr or the influential ancestors of our family, we tend to talk about their legacy more than their possessions. So what is legacy exactly? And how does it relate? What is legacy? I heard someone describe the difference as: Inheritance is something you leave to someone; Legacy is something you leave in someone. I think that saying embodies more of how we feel about what legacy is. It is […]

The learning triangle ~ And the advantage of understanding it.

Sure, there is a learning curve (and we will talk about a really interesting one in a few weeks). But what about the learning triangle? What if we could examine the way information moves with a wide base and a narrow point. There is an example I recall from years ago but I can’t remember who taught it. I’m not going to allow that to stop me from showing you though… You like volcanos? (For entertainment and dramatic effect, read this in that movie preview voice) Deep in the belly of the Earth, hot molten rock swirls around looking for a way to get out. The forces build. The magma makes its way toward the surface finding it’s way to the tallest volcano. It hits the base of the volcano, a width that no one […]

Intention vs Expectation ~ Their difference may be their connection.

As I write this, my intention is to share something valuable and insightful that you will easily want to share. And yet “the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry” – Robert Burns, To A Mouse (1786) In the poem by Robert Burns, he is essentially crafting an apology to a mouse who’s home he destroyed while ploughing his field. From the sounds of it, he never expected to hurt the mouse or even see the mouse. He just intended to prepare his field. But what if he could have expected it? Intention Intention is unfortunately one of those words that is defined by using the word in the definition; kinda crazy. At it’s core, I believe intentions are important in dreaming up the life that we want to have and the goals […]

What can baseball teach you about life? ~ Even if you’ve never played

Baseball is a sport of chess… but, if you’re not a fan of the game that will never really matter. I would venture to say, even if you don’t understand the sport, you will at least resonate with the life lessons I mention in this article. Now… as I write this article, The Chicago Cubs have earned their way to the World Series for the first time in 71 years! I will admit that this team has always had my support in the playoffs because of how severe an underdog they have been. Plus, it has been over 100 years since the Cubs won the championship. All that aside, with baseball season coming to an end, what can baseball teach you about life, even if you’ve never played? Life Lessons from Baseball The apparent lesson from the […]

Do deadlines actually work? There is one simple trick…

I recently wondered to myself, “are deadlines helpful?” I may have shared with you before that I’ve been an entrepreneur for over 16 years… I’m not sure if I have conveyed how difficult that is at times. The most difficult part of it all is the solitude in which most things are done. And, not because it gets lonely, but because there is likely no one to hold me accountable. In a very transparent conversation with myself I asked, “Do deadlines increase productivity?” Nope… The primary reason I concluded this was because the deadlines were ones that I created for myself, and the likelihood is that no one else even knew they existed. For example, I have a hard due date on every article for the website; Monday at 9:30 EST the article is published. […]
